Submissions can be either non-fiction or fiction from around the world that focus on Singapore’s history. They can be written in English or translated into English, and must be published between June 1, 2021 and May 31, 2024. The winner will be announced in Oct. 2021.
Mahbubani added: “The history of Singapore is not a static story and new information and insights continue to emerge as demonstrated by the shortlist this year.” He pointed out that the prize has had an immediate impact, with many readers expressing interest in the history of their city.
Some of the titles on this year’s shortlist include Leluhur: The Spirit of Kampong Gelam by Hidayah Amin, whose book shines a light on the historical significance of a building many now only know as a tourist attraction. Another of the shortlisted books is Imperial Creatures: Animals in Singapore’s History, by Timothy P. Barnard, a British historian who focuses on the relationship between humans and animals.
The judges will be looking for the most thought-provoking and original works that demonstrate a strong connection to Singapore’s unique history, as well as how their research has implications for our understanding of Singapore today. They will also be looking at the overall quality of the work and its ability to engage with the widest possible audience.
