In Hong Kong, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) operates a number of public swimming pools. While the majority of them feature a main 50m pool and several smaller training and teaching pools, some also have water installations for kids, such as mushroom- or tree-shaped fountains. The LCSD also has a team of staff who clean and maintain each pool, as well as test the water for safety.
However, during a recent dispute between the LCSD and the Recreation and Sports Professionals General Union (RSPU), the RSPU warned that some public pools may close lanes or facilities reserved for swim instruction due to a shortage of lifeguards. This would have an adverse effect on swimming classes, and swimmers could be exposed to contaminated swimming pool water, which is known for its high level of vomit or faeces.
The RSPU’s warning prompted the LCSD to increase the salaries of seasonal lifeguards and recruit more full-time lifeguards on two-year contracts. The LCSD also announced that it would introduce measures to improve the pool environment, such as installing automatic chlorination systems and ensuring that each pool has sufficient water capacity.
Despite the aforementioned issues, most public pools have reopened and are now fully operational. However, the RSPU warns that it might take longer to find replacement lifeguards due to the ongoing dispute. As a result, some public swimming pools might only open partially for the summer season.
