The 2023 Singapore Prize winners were announced at a gala awards ceremony in Singapore on Tuesday (7 November). Britain’s Prince William was present to witness the awarding of the prizes to the five green innovators, including Accion Andina who are working on cleaner lithium-ion batteries for electric cars and WildAid Marine Program who are tightening up marine enforcement to end illegal fishing and support ocean conservation.
The NUS Singapore History Prize, established in 2014 on a generous endowment from an anonymous donor, is expanding in 2027 to include non-print media works under a new ‘Arts and Multimedia’ category alongside the existing book category. The organisers will welcome nominations from any artist, author, playwright, performer or producer of a multimedia and artistic historical work delivered in the English language (works that are translated into the English language may also be considered). The nominated works must engage deeply with Singapore’s history, with the goal of providing either new insights into Singapore’s unique history or new ways of exciting Singaporeans’ imagination about the past.
In addition, the NUS Singapore History Prize will continue to seek out and recognise outstanding publications of a general interest that have made a substantial impact on our understanding of Singapore’s history. The Prize is judged by a distinguished Jury Panel, chaired by Mr Kishore Mahbubani, a Distinguished Fellow at the NUS Asia Research Institute.
This year, for the first time in its 30-year history, the prize awarded 12 winners across its four languages – Chinese, Malay, Tamil and English. The winners were picked by a panel of 43 judges led by acclaimed authors and literary figures, and included Clara Chow who became the first writer in the prize’s history to be shortlisted for all three categories of fiction and non-fiction.
