The Sidney Prize and the UNESCO City of Film Rising Talent Awards

Sydney Prize

The New York Times columnist David Brooks often highlights his favorite long-form essays of the year in his “Sydney Awards.” These honor the work of writers at the top echelons of national publishing: Hilton Als writing for the New Yorker, Ed Yong writing for the Atlantic and other heavy hitters from national publications. But there is another type of award that also celebrates the work of journalists who seek to promote justice and social change. This is the Sidney Hillman Prize, named after a former president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America (a precursor union to Workers United, SEIU) who fought to build a vibrant union movement that extended beyond the shop floor and into all aspects of working people’s lives.

Winners receive a $500 honorarium and a certificate designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel. Nominations are accepted monthly and can be made for one’s own work or someone else’s. The winner is announced on the second Wednesday of each month.

Founded in 2022, the Sydney Film Festival is Australia’s leading independent film festival. This year’s event will feature more than 160 films, including both Australian and international features, shorts and documentaries. In addition to the main competition, the festival will feature several curated sections showcasing cutting-edge and experimental works.

The Sydney UNESCO City of Film Rising Talent Award recognises an emerging NSW-based film creative who has contributed to the development of short film in the state. This is a cash prize of $10,000 awarded by Screen NSW.

This scholarship provides a stipend enhancement for two years to an outstanding graduate student entering FAU with a master’s degree in history. Applicants must be admitted to graduate study in history and maintain full-time status, good standing and a GTA ship. Applicants must be able to present a public research presentation in their second semester of graduate study.

PCI’s Sidney Freedman Craftsmanship Awards recognize manufacturing plants for excellence in the production of architectural precast concrete (A1, CA, AA, AB, or AC) and glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC). Structures and elements of any size or kind can be entered. These awards differ from the Design Awards and Industry Advancement Awards that focus on architectural designs and ideas for projects, structures, and bridges.

The Sidney Prize encourages deeper reflection and consideration by HLS students about their chosen profession and its many challenges in a rapidly-changing world. Paper topics may address the professional life of lawyers, legal institutions and their role in society, the effect of diversity or gender-related issues on the practice of law, changes to legal services over time, or comparisons between different types of professional service providers. The winning paper will be published in Law & Society.
