Sidney prize is an award given to people that are doing great things in the world. They are not necessarily famous people, but they are people that have an impact on the lives of others. These awards are based on a variety of criteria including how much impact the person has had, and what they have accomplished in life. People can apply for these prizes by writing an essay on their achievements. There are many different types of sidney prize available to those who would like to win one.
The Sidney Hook Memorial Award is presented to a Phi Beta Kappa member who has achieved national distinction in scholarship and/or undergraduate teaching, as well as demonstrated leadership in support of liberal arts education. The award is named after the distinguished American philosopher who was a longtime leader in the Phi Beta Kappa Society and served as its president.
This award is for the best dissertation-based article published in the area of Consumer Culture Theory (CCT). The winner will receive $1500. One honorable mention award may also be given ($1000). The competition is open to authors of CCT-oriented articles that have been published in the preceding year. The winning and honorable mention article will be announced at the annual CCT conference luncheon.
Sam Stein won the September Sidney Prize for exposing how the sequestration is crippling vital federal programs such as public defenders, social services and medical research. The prize is a monetary award given by the left-of-center Hillman Foundation that was founded in 1946 in memory of Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America union president Sidney Hillman. The Foundation’s board of directors includes the unions Unite Here and Workers United, SEIU and the actor Danny Glover.
Each year, the Sidney Cox Committee – an interdisciplinary group of Dartmouth faculty members – selects an outstanding piece of undergraduate writing in any subject or genre that addresses a specific topic. The Committee appoints one judge each year to review manuscripts and decide upon the winner, and the judge is not required to be present in Hanover to do so.
The Sidney Prize is a literary prize awarded to authors of short stories that explore the notion of travel and adventure. The award is supported by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation and is presented by Overland. The prize is open to writers residing anywhere in the world and at any stage of their career. Each entry must be no more than 3000 words and should be themed around the idea of travel.
The prize is a $2,500 cash award, and the winning story will be published in Overland magazine. Entries must be submitted by the end of March. Multiple entries are allowed, but each must be entered individually and accompanied by a separate entry fee. Authors’ names should not appear on the manuscript, and submissions will be judged anonymously. A complete set of guidelines can be found here.
